The Way I Read

All books for me are linked to the ones read just before and just after them. I go on runs where there is an obvious theme or connection, but then a book’s dedication or a topic merely touched upon can send me down another path. I enjoy looking back on my list of books read to see the themes or to puzzle about what made me pick up Joyce Maynard’s At Home in the World right after reading Howard Carter’s Tomb of Tutankhamen. I’m also a big re-reader. If a book gave me a good dose of fresh imagery or a true sense of place or a good laugh, I’m likely to go back for more.

Nice intro Christine - What was in "Under the Tuscan Sun" that appealed to you? I didn't read it, but might...Will you include poetry on this blog?

Sophia,

Under the Tuscan Sun is a lovely memoir written by a poet. France Mayes tells of her experience buying and restoring an Italian villa with her new love after raising a daughter to adulthood and divorcing her longtime husband. It is a vicarious dream for me. (The Italian villa part, not the divorce. . .) She describes the dinners and vistas with great care. I feel like I know her cypress-lined road to the village and have walked with her on the terraced land to cut lettuces in the spring morning. The movie based on this book only shares the name.

I will certainly include any books of poetry that I read here, but it won't be a place where I'll publish any of my poems.

Thank you all for your responses!
