Berg

Yesterday, my girls and I popped into the library so Olivia could check out a new audiobook. She loves listening to a story over many days and usually will go off to her room to play or draw while she listens to escape her little sister. While we were there, I took a quick look for Master and Commander in book form again. No dice. Then I just thought I’d glance at the New Books. A slim novel by Elizabeth Berg caught my eye. I have read her Pull of the Moon twice and liked it very much. I also read her nonfiction book called Escaping into the Open: The Art of Writing True. This one is The Handmaid and the Carpenter. I checked it out knowing nothing more than it looked like historical fiction, is by Berg, and is short. Turns out it’s about Mary and Joseph (yes, that Mary and Joseph) and feels kind of like The Red Tent, which I loved. Mary is younger than Joseph and is spunky, full of questions about the world, and playful. He is more reserved and concerned about being proper and traditional. And the big news hasn’t even hit them yet. So far so good.
