I often have a few books with bookmarks in them at once. I enjoy classics more than contemporary works of fiction, often read historical fiction, and love to get glimpses into other people's lives by reading memoirs and biographies.
The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeanette Walls. true story - interesting, fresh way of looking at a way of life of which most of us can't conceive. seeing poverty and life conditions - wondering how much of it can be avoided and how much is choice.
Don, that's the second time Bill Bryson had come up today! Sophia is just about to read A Walk in the Woods. I find the 2000 year mark to be a challenge...when was The Red Tent written? Or the Poisonwood Bible? The latter needed the whole last section removed, though. I guess my favorite would have to be Leif Enger's Peace Like A River.
Wait! I want to change my choice. As anyone who knows me will attest, my favorite book by far is "A Girl Named Zippy" by Haven Kimmel. Just thought it was earlier than 2000, but no, 2001. I cannot express just how very very keen this book is. Go read it and if you don't love it, I'll buy your copy!

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. The story's settings and conflict remain vivid in my mind.

Cook, Red Tent was Sept 1997. Poisonwood was Feb 1999. I agree with you that Poisonwood ran too long, but was heart-wrenching. I loved the Red Tent.
h, Glass Castle was huge among my bookstore co-workers.
My husband, Jim, votes for The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Chabon.
For myself, I really enjoyed Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires. Food writing. Don and I share an interest here.
Thank you all for sharing your favorites!
