Five Magaziness You Might Not Know

The Sun
(www.thesunmagazine.org/)
“Founded in 1974, The Sun is a non-profit, ad-free monthly magazine that publishes an eclectic mix of personal essays, fiction, interviews, poetry, and photographs.” The best part of every issue, for me, is Readers Write. Every month, there is a topic, such as The Marriage Bed, Stealing, The Bathroom, Being Chosen, etc., and readers share experiences from their own lives. It trusts that everyone has at least one good story to tell. Some are funny; many are sad and moving.

Adbusters
(http://adbusters.org/home/)
“We are a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age. Our aim is to topple existing power structures and forge a major shift in the way we will live in the 21st century. While two-thirds of Adbusters' readers reside in the United States, the magazine has subscribers in 60 other countries, with one of the most diverse readerships of any publication. Our readers are professors and students; activists and politicians; environmentalists and media professionals; corporate watch dogs and industry insiders; kids who love our slick ad parodies and parents who worry about their children logging too many hours a day in the electronic environment.” Hip, edgy, sometimes disturbing.

Utne Reader
(http://www.utne.com/magazine/)
“Founded in 1984 by Eric Utne, Utne Reader reprints the best articles from over 2,000 alternative media sources bringing you the latest ideas and trends emerging in our culture... Provocative writing from diverse perspectives... Insightful analysis of art and media... Down-to-earth news and resources you can use... In-depth coverage of compelling people and issues that affect your life... The best of the alternative media.” Excellent browsing. Pick one up at the library or check out online.

New Moon
(www.newmoon.org/magazine/)
“Is an advertising-free magazine uniquely created by girls 8-14 for girls in the same age bracket. Contains fiction, poetry, artwork, science, and articles about the lives of girls and women around the globe.” Made on a completely different planet than Teen Vogue, Cosmo Girl and Seventeen.

mental_floss
(www.mentalfloss.com/magazine/)
“For the record: mental_floss magazine is an intelligent read, but not too intelligent. We're the sort of intelligent that you hang out with for a while, enjoy our company, laugh a little, smile a lot and then we part ways. Great times. And you only realize how much you learned from us after a little while. Like a couple days later when you're impressing your friends with all these intriguing facts and things you picked up from us, and they ask you how you know so much, and you think back on that great afternoon you spent with us and you smile. And then you lie and say you read a lot.” Another great one to just pick through. Lots of interesting tidbits and facts. Although a friend has questioned their research. . .

Great idea Christine. I'm interested in mental-floss and Adbusters, I don't know if I've perused them yet. The Sun I love. Someday, I will read you in Readers Write. Did you get New Moon for Daughter the Eldest?

Thanks, Cook. Yup, we're giving a subscription of New Moon to Oliv for her 10th birthday next month. Shhh.
