Your Turn Thursday

There's never been a book so widely and wildly anticipated as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but for those of you who have followed other series, you know what it is like to have to wait for a book. What's the last book from a series (other than Harry Potter) that you couldn't wait to get your hands on?

NERD ALERT

I don't read any serials, but I was very excited whenever Susan Wise Bauer put out a new book of world history for children. Her set of four "Story of the World" books (Ancients, Middle Ages, Early Modern, and Modern) have made it possible for me to learn about history for myself and to teach it to my children and students.

Hubby and I are waiting for "First Born" by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. It is the third in the Time Odyssey Trilogy. We've both read the first "Time's Eye" in which the time on earth is ripped apart and rearranged leading to some interesting historical anomalies.Hubby has read the second, "Sun Storm". "First Born" is due out in Dec and I think I'll wait 'til nearer the time to read the second.

Alexander McCall Smith keeps adding to his series "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". I thought I had finished the last one, but then another has been published. My mom usually passes these to me when she is done, and I have looked forward to each one. It's good to check in on Precious Ramotswe to see what she is doing, and to see how Tlokweng Motors is faring.

The last book from a series I was panting after was The Beginning by K. A. Applegate, the final installment in her Animorphs series. I followed that epic from 1996 until 2001 and checked the bookstore religiously every week. It remains the only series I ever got into. And I mean really into, like hardcore squealing fangirl enthrallment. (Though Lynn Flewelling is swiftly winning me over. I feel like I'm cheating on my childhood and it's disturbingly exciting.)

Right now, I'm very into a graphic novel series called Fables, and I was going crazy when the last one came out--Barnes & Noble's warehouses don't seem to get the titles in until about three weeks after they're published. Every time I was at work, I frantically checked to see if they were in yet, and was always frustrated when they weren't. Not sure when the next one is coming out, but I can't wait. DRD

Lots!!! Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is going on #12 and Eric and I can't wait. Much homage must be paid to Diana Gabaldon, of course (I follow her religiously). I love getting my hands on a new Dresden Files book (Jim Butcher), and I enjoy the cheeky Janet Evanovich number books. I also read Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series. But I don't read much.
