I really enjoyed reading Mahoney's Down the Nile, even though Don says, "There's no there there." It was her real experience traveling by herself in Egypt. She tells what happened and shares many beautiful details. I learned more about the people of Egypt, the ancient ruins, and the Nile. I was interested and entertained. I'm happy.
Instead of asking a book question today, I'd like to ask a travel question. I read in last Sunday's Travel section of the Chicago Tribune a list of odd things that travelers always take with them. One person actually takes a length of real seatbelt strapping with a proper seatbelt clasp and slips it over herself and her bus seat during long and wild foreign bus rides. Another person said they never left the country without iodine tablets for making fresh drinkable water. Whether your travel is foreign or domestic, what is something you always take with you?

Books. DRD
I have to agree with Danika, even if I KNOW I'll never even get to open it, I'll always take a book.
i now travel w/ my Handy Steamer so i can cook everything from seafood and veggies to the rice to make my sushi rolls. i always take my little pillow that i've had since i was born and usually am able to stuff a down pillow into some suitcase.
umm, since i'm a constant traveler now and have been for nearly 2 years, i've pretty much figured out how to take everything i could need in the smallest amt of space. i take a swiss army knife, wine opener, shaker of salt. my softball glove and shoes are always in the car. i take a little fan also for white noise to sleep in and often my little tv goes w/ me.
Interesting answers from a very frequent traveler. H is on the road a lot.
A book, of course, and I like to have music with me, too. And now that I have an iPod (!) I can have all my music with me.
I don't even travel enough to reliably answer this question, :\. But I'm gonna go with the super-original answer of books and/or magazines. That's pretty much a staple for me. I also need my make-up. Hopefully the fact that I can't travel without books makes up for that.
Oh, oops, that last comment was me (Lisa).
I take my drawing supplies - just a small pad/pencil. But I never draw anything unless I am forced to.And I take my own earphones for the airplane - the ones they provide are always broken. Chris always brings as many books as he can sneak. I have to confess that I always bring my Nintendo DS, if I can fit it in. Nothing like a little Animal Crossing to finish a day...
Wet wipes are good. In a little Ziploc bag. And a mix of peanuts/raisins/M&Ms for when you need a little something.
Okay, so I virtually never travel, but when/if I do, I cannot leave the house without my knitting. (Christine, I'm sure you're just shocked...) My knitting goes with me everywhere, including little day-to-day trips. Doctor's appointment? Gotta wait in chairs forever, may as well knit. Dentist? I actually knit in the chair while they work on my teeth (my dentist thinks I'm cute, and possibly the youngest old lady they've ever met). Playground with the kids? What could be a more perfect afternoon than sitting in the shade, nice little breeze in the hair, and a sock to work on? Heck, I even got mad at the movie theater the other day because I *didn't* bring my knitting, and had plenty of light during the 25 minutes of commercials & previews to work on a project.
Yeah, sticks & string are essential travel companions. :-)
Of course! Thanks, Heather.
Ipod and cigars of course
