found a used copy of Beloved by Toni Morrison that they made into a movie tho never saw it. more interesting insights on the plights of the blacks in slavery-America with enough unusual twists to keep it interesting. very well written.

Sad, sad, sad, sad, SAD. There is a scene in that movie and book that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

I had to read some Whitman poetry for my American Literature class. I adore Whitman's stuff; it resonates with me very deeply. I was reading "From Pent-up Aching Rivers" and just cried like a baby through the whole thing.

Some people have pointed out that Whitman is pretty sexual. I agree, but I absolutely don't think it's in a pornographic way. Whitman takes the human body and turns into something sacred, and he does it with simple, exquisite language that just pierces my heart every time.

After much coaxing and poking a friend of mine got me to pick up "The Devil Wears Prada" by Lauren Weisberger. I am now on "Canterbury Tales" by Chaucer for one of my classes and I am also reading "The Three Musketeers" by Dumas for one of my classes.

I am reading "Farenheit 451" to my daughter, and really, really enjoying the story, the writing style, the sci-fi. Did you know there is dew on the grass in the morning? We stop every paragraph or page and talk about what Bradbury is getting at. There are somre rough areas, but they are worth getting through.

S-l-o-g-g-i-n-g through HP #6. (Geez, that woman needs an editor)
I am allowing it to consume my reading life until I finish book 7. It's the bane of the bookselling life, sometimes you gotta read what NEEDS to be read, even if you don't really wanna.

Aside to Sophia- really try (if you haven't) to read Bradbury's "Dandelion Wine". Wow. Just wow.

I'm reading the Harry Potter series. A friend lent me all seven books and I'm hooked. I'm supposed to be reading The Count of Monte Cristo for my book club, but I can't separate from Harry!

I did it! I finished The Iliad! It was dense, it was full of lists of names of people mentioned only once (at the time they were being killed gruesomely), people gave randomly long speeches on battlefields, and the Bovine Fairy apparently lived off on the sidelines to supply all the warriors with enough animals to eat and sacrifice enormous numbers of them on a regular basis for the nine years they were at war, but I finished it! HOORAY!!! DRD

I have not read Dandelion Wine for years - I will reread it for sure after this. I realize I have been reading fantasy more often, and maybe prefer sci-fi.

Don, I totally agree and disagree with you re "Dandelion Wine" and Harry Potter.

Finished Fahrenheit 451 over the weekend. Started reading it again today because something happened at the end which seems unexplained to me unless I missed something.

Sophia - will you and your daughter be at the discussion group? I'll be there, hopefully with my son if he reads it by then. Hope to see you and put a face to a blog-name.

Erin, Allie, and Danika, thanks for often mentioning what you are reading for school. I find that interesting, too. E, didn't know Whitman touched you so. I need to read the poem you cited.

So there are three of you out there who are hammering through the Potters right in a row (and for the first time): Don, Heather of the knitting world, and, could that be Laura from Texas?

Danika, congrats on seeing Homer through. Cupcakes for everyone!

Sophia, that makes sense about the sci-fi. Dune is a huge favorite of yours. Could it be that LOTR is the obvious exception to your otherwise sci-fi over fantasy preference?

Cook, there is a young adult vampire series that is very popular right now: Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. Those are 3 different titles. You might want to check them out. Maybe my blog lurking manager, Jodi, would like to comment. . .

Insomniac, what are you reading?

Yes, it's Laura from Austin Texas who's working through HP right now, though I'll have to take a break this weekend for the Austin City Limits music festival!
