Movie Monday

The Beatles' film Help! was rereleased on DVD last week. It hadn't been available since 1997. We Netflixed it and watched it as a family on Saturday night. I was surprised at how much our 6-year-old, Maria, enjoyed it. She wanted to watch it again the next morning. I've never really liked Help! It's too wacky and phony, too much James Bond meets Monty Python, and it's no Hard Day's Night. I did enjoy seeing every one of the music videos within the film though, especially "You're Going to Lose That Girl" in the studio.

I wouldn't tell you if I got Masterpiece Theatre's Virgin Queen from interlibrary loan. And I wouldn't mention if I had been watching a little every night. Because then you might think I was obsessed.

Don, did you ever get around to watching your Tivo-ed Tom Petty documentary?

Anyone see any good movies lately?

We watched "Out of the Ashes" which is based on the true story of Gisella Perl. She survived Auschwitz and saved the lives of dozens of pregnant women by performing abortions, without which the women would have been killed. Later, when she was applying for US citizenship, she was interrogated by the INS under suspicion of colluding with the Nazis.

This was a real gut-wrenching story, as are all from the holocaust. I think I might seek out her autobiography and see how close the film was to the real story.
