Ian McEwan

I read my first book by Ian McEwan recently, On Chesil Beach. Most of it takes place on the wedding night of a young, British couple in the early 60's. They are both virgins. He is anxious and nervous about consummating their love. She is terrified and disgusted. In between descriptions of how this all plays out are moments from their earlier lives to show who they are and where they've come from. It is an interesting character study and a sad story of miscommunication. McEwan is a talented writer who can do a lot with a single sentence. I'd like to read another.

Wow, that actually sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to check that out one of these days.

I did feel that McEwan was diggin' on the female character too much, but when I talked to Martha about it, she saw the woman as achieving happiness and the man as searching aimlessly. Hmmm. Also, why does one flawed character of either gender have to represent all people of that gender?
