Maria and I are loving The Hobbit! This morning we got to the famous chapter called "Riddles in the Dark" where we meet Gollum for the first time. He is such a wretched creature. As he plays the ancient riddle game with Bilbo, he remembers the goblin bones that he "left to gnaw" on his slimy island, but now he wants "something softer." Get out of there, Bilbo! Can you solve Gollum's first riddle?
What has roots that nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

If I remember correctly the answer is a mountain. Of course, the "never growing" part is not strictly true if you consider the geological processes of mountain formation......sorry, just me being pedantic.

Sorry! For some reason I must have felt I needed to repeat myself.....
You were right--both times!
How 'bout Bilbo's first riddle:
Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.
teeth, right? And I always loved the one..
"A box without hinges, key or lid,
yet golden treasure inside is hid".
But my sister memorized "This thing all things devours..." I don't know it, just the answer.
Yes, teeth is the answer!
Yours is eggses.
Here's the one Diana knows. Any guesses?
This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

So glad Maria's enjoying The Hobbit. I like Riddles in the Dark, too; it's so tense!
About the riddle with the horses, I thought it had something to do with chestnuts? Or else I'm mistaken.
Well it's an old chestnut, if that's what you mean. HA!
Riddles are fun, but I'm pretty bad at them. The only one I got out of these was Time.
Here's one I wrote when I was in fourth grade:
It's used a lot
under a pot
The more it drinks
The more it shrinks
(and no it's not something related to a toilet, haha)

Erin, Don is right. Gollum calls it a "chestnut."
Lisa, I first thought "sponge," but a sponge would get bigger not smaller.
Can anyone guess Lisa's riddle?
Ok, I don't know if anyone else is trying to guess. Should I give the answer? It's not the greatest riddle but it does make sense when you hear the answer.

Lisa,
Is the answer "FIRE"?
Tell us, Lisa.
Good one, Insomniac! I'll bet you're right.
That's right, it's fire! Yay!
