So good to see so many of you have so much to say! I've had a busy couple of days and haven't been able to respond. Here I am!
First of all, Don, nice rant. And I'm fine with almost all of it, even your questioning of the publication of Eggers' HWOSG. But did you have to bring in This American Life? Occasionally, This American Life hits a clinker, and I do ask out loud, "Writer Person, why should I care about this?" and turn it off, but usually I listen with complete interest and often laugh and sometimes cry. May I suggest downloading the recent episode called "The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar"? I listened to it in bed a week or so ago and lay there in the dark for the full hour in suspense and disbelief. Also, Don, how's the Chabon book? Also, Don, you have an avatar. Is that a younger you with Mr. Peanut?
Sophia, hope you are enjoying California and Atonement. Cooksin just loaned me her copy. Anyone want to read McEwan's Atonement with us?
Melanie, how about letting us know how the interview goes?
Kathy Marie and Allie, long time no see! Welcome again.
What's up with the Dresden Files?
And Insomniac, what did you mean about "Ted" the other day?
Love,
Christine

Since I got the first paragraph, I guess I'll respond first.
I will check out the episode you mentioned. As I've not checked it out lately, TAL and I may have just gotten off on a bad note. It just way too often seemed to be a forum for Ira Glass and his oh-so-smart-and-precious cadre (how's THAT word, Martha?) to indulge in their fantasy that they were somehow inventing literature and discourse.
The Chabon is interesting but slow going. I've recommitted to Perdido Street Station.
As for the Avatar, hmmmmmm....
Yay, Don!
And Olivia, I hope you enjoy Cleopatra. I loved the Royal Diaries, and Cleopatra was an especially good one. Let me know what you think.
Interview went fine -- I was impressed that they asked me what my last book was. I, of course, called the question for what it was said "A book on interview questions and answers -- and that was one of them!" HA. Should find out in the next few days. Cross your fingers and send me positive vibes! Also.... I'm up for Atonement. Just ordered a copy from half.com. I'll start it with you -- can't promise a finish, but you never know! You've always been good at broadening my horizons...
The Dresden Files is about a wizard named Harry Dresden who lives and works in present-day Chicago. He has a small private investigation business but gets the bulk of his income from consultation work with the police department.
The premise is that magic is an integral part of the world, but up until the now it's sort of been underground and ordinary people are just beginning to become aware of the supernatural. There's been mention of something called the Nevernever, which I think is a parallel realm, but it hasn't been used yet. (I'm only up to book #2, so it may very well be more prominent later.)
Thanks, Mr Peanut!
Your Royal Diary days seem like yesterday to me, Danika.
Mel's in for Atonement! Anyone else?
Erin, so it's nonfiction, then?
I wish, Christine. I'd be hunting around Chicago for him and asking if I could be his receptionist. That or clinging to his leg and going all squee, one of the two.
I know i answered you in person today Christine, but in case anyone else cares: Ted is the character played by Anthony Hopkins in "Hearts in Atlantis". You never really know his fate. Frustrating for someone who likes loose threads to be tied up and snipped.
