Movie Monday

Last Friday, the girls and I watched Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. We all liked it and thought it was sweet and charming. It made us laugh, and it made me and Maria cry (she's a real tender heart). I think this review from Amazon.com gets it right:

Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares? Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove. But the film is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible, and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence: she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head. --Robert Horton

We watched 3 over the rainy weekend. Evita, studied Argentina history recently. The kids enjoyed the music but I had to explain some of the movie to them. It got a bit confusing especially the beginning. The Water Horse, a sweet film, everybody enjoyed and Nick read the book first. The Seeker: Dark Rising, you would think that with that title I would have anticipated the darkness, but it was PG and seemed a bit dark for the rating. There was no blood or even death, but a lot of threats. Again it was greatly enjoyed.

I watched Stardust, which was fun, but predictable. Then i watched Superbad for the first time, which was insanely crude and NOT a movie i should have watched with my mom, but was still pretty damn funny in a very obscene way.

Ha! Good "mom" movie, Ben. Next time you go to Ohio, you should watch Knocked Up.

Actually, she had already seen Knocked up, haha.

"Hearts in Atlantis" with one of my all time favorite actors Sir Anthony Hopkins. I'd seen it before but enjoyed a rerun. One of the less chaotic, sadistic stories from Stephen King. But whatever happened to Ted?

I recently picked up Sweeney Todd on DVD. After a rewatch, I have to retract my nose-in-the-air Broadway snobbery. Maybe I was just paying more attention this time, but there were a million little things the actors did that made me fangirl all over the place. And man, watching Depp during the "Epiphany" sequence. It is to squee.

Apparently there's a recording of a stage performance floating around out there. I must seek it out.

watched "Golden Compass" on the airplane. Fell asleep. Watched the end of Brooks "The Producers". Laughed excessively.
