Not Ready for Kitchen Confidential

Finished reading Toast: The Story of a Boy's Hunger this morning with my sweet coffee. Short, quick, interesting. It's the autobiography of British food writer Nigel Slater. I was more interested in the first half where he's talking about his childhood, the loss of his mother, his interest in food, and his relationship with his father. The last bit deals with his early start in kitchens (many of them unsanitary) and the partying of the kitchen staffers. Now I want to read some clean food writing to get the image of fly-splattered worksurfaces out of my head, but I want to stay in England. Maybe a little Elizabeth David?
