Movie Monday

Jim and I went to see Slumdog Millionaire last weekend. It was my pick; Jim thought Benjamin Button might have been better for the two of us. He'd heard that Slumdog was a little graphic, and I'm a sensitive viewer. He couldn't tell me for sure because he had stayed away from the reviews, stacking them on his dresser for after he'd seen it. He does that with good movies. But I said that I could close my eyes during the hard stuff. It's an underdog story about a boy from the slums in India. It's supposed to be beautiful and uplifting! So off we went. It starts out with a bang. I had my eyes closed for about 5 of the first 15 minutes and then said I was going to the car for my knitting and would meet him in the lobby when it was over. Too much. I left sad and mad, torn between feeling like a wimp and wondering why the appetite for pain and violence in films is so high. I needed the time to knit just to get my head back in a better place. Wish I'd seen the Pitt/Blanchett movie instead.

How has your movie-going been?

Well, my sister and daughter and I watched Kubrick's "2001:A Space Odyssey". Huh. It was a favorite film of mine when I was about 12, and although it's got some fantastically wild moments in it, it was still impressive. The design is solid, with great Swiss streamlining and believable spacecraft. The timing is slow, with little action, but are fitting for how the whole movie comes together. I am sure many people would say snore-o-rama, but what an accomplishment for a movie made some 40 years ago! And a great soundtrack.

In sympathy with C's experience at the movies, although I can stomach a fair amount of pain and violence in movies, it is amazing how much there is. Disturbing that people must be getting used to bigger amount of it...

I've never seen that movie, Sophia, but like everyone, I have visuals from clips I've seen.

Yancy and I saw The Spirit and were not impressed. The dialogue was a little silly. We're thinking it tried too hard to be clever, and wasn't. The visuals were neat but there wasn't a whole lot of substance to back it up. Yancy wanted to see it because he's a comic book fan, but he admitted that he couldn't imagine anyone liking it as a movie in and of itself.

I watched Spirited Away on Thursday night, in celebration of the fact that I had a snow day on Friday. It was astoundingly beautiful. I had some laundry with me to fold, but after putting the movie in and sitting down, I didn't move for about two hours I was so fascinated. I don't usually get like that about anything on television. It was a great experience.
