Just started "Bedside Baccalaureate" which is pretty interesting and am actually looking forward to "Dog On It"

A fact-y, learn-y book and a book about a dog detective? Wouldn't that second one be FICtion, Don?

Im reading the newest Nightside novel by Simon R. Green called Just Another Judgement Day.

Right now, I'm reading Alphabet Juice and The Artist's Way. The Artist's Way comes across to me as so much floofy new-age drivel, and frankly, I'm skimming the majority of it for that reason. It does have one or two good ideas, though, such as writing three pages every morning whether you have anything to say or not. It sure is hard finding the useful bits amongst all the froofy, healing-the-artist-within crap, though.

Alphabet Juice, however, rocks. Geektastic!

HEY! I've been known to read Fiction.
Besides, the dog isn't the detective, the detective is.
Heather- I tried to read "Alphabet Juice" and just found it to be way too Blount-y and yes, it did kinda make me feel dumb. Why you should care, dunno.
Also, iTunes is now DRM Free!

I just finished a Terry Pratchett novel I got from my B&N Secret Santa, called Maskerade. It was wonderfully hilarious; my student spent all day yesterday looking at me funny as I burst out laughing out of nowhere.
I picked up Robin McKinley's Outlaws of Sherwood, but it's feeling heavy-handed to me, not as lovely as some of her other works. We'll see if I stick it out.
School starts next week, and then it'll be time to pick up the textbooks again, so I'm trying to cram in as much fun reading as possible.

Almost done with Kalpa Imperial for the library group, and well into A Lion Among Men.

Also just read A Mermaid's Tale: A Personal Search for Love and Lore by Amanda Adams. Mostly enjoyable and there are some beautiful illustrations. But there were several times when the author came off as deeply insecure, particularly in reaction to other women. She seems to divide us into super-special mermaids (like herself) and boring ordinary chicks. She has some massive hang-ups about female sexuality. There was some light misandry ("women are awesome and mystical, men suck") thrown in, too, which is a major peeve of mine. I really wish Adams had included more folklore and fewer personal issues.

Don, what personifies Blount-y-ism? I've never read anything else of his, so I'm all noob to it.

Heather said...

Okay, on second thought, "personifies" may not have been the word I was looking for there...

I am reading "the miracle At Speedy Motors", by McCall Smith. It's charming, as usual.

What's this Alphabet Juice, anyway?

I've read The Artist's Way. "Morning pages" are a useful way to get the junk out of the way before settling in to write.

So Don, does the dog bark or speak English when he questions his subjects? Can he drive?

Sophia, have you only read the Botswanan tales by McCall Smith or have you also read the Scottish mysteries?

Don said...

I don't know, Christine. The book doesn't come out til Feb. So stop "dogging" me.
HA!

Geez, 11 comments. You think we've been waiting for C to ask us about ourselves again?

Since school's gonna start soon...nothing! Although I've been trying to read the paper more and keep up with current events. I'm newly subscribed to the Trib and Mother Jones and I'm working on getting my money's worth.
