Around the World with Michael Palin
From the back of the DVD: Monty Python comedian/writer Michael Palin takes up the famous challenge: to travel around the world in only 80 days. Air travel is forbidden, and wherever possible he uses the same routes and transport as Jules Verne's fictional hero, Phileas Fogg, meeting many interesting characters en route. As he races across continents and against the clock, Michael's charm and ingenuity delights the armchair traveler.
Jim, Oliv, Maria, and I have all been enjoying this 20-year-old adventure filmed for the BBC. We are about halfway through the three discs (nine episodes) and are all looking forward to our next installment tonight. Palin is a wonderful guide: funny, adventurous, and humble. The girls and I have watched his Sahara series before, and now I think we'll be checking out his trips to the Himalayas, the Poles, and the Pacific Rim.

Sounds interesting . . . I love Michael Palin.
Me too. I just ordered the Monty Python Diaries from inter-library loan.
Last night we watched the rest of disc two of Around the World in 80 Days. Makes me want to read the Jules Verne novel. Oliv had me dig up our Great Illustrated Classics version for her, and she read it all yesterday.
Speaking of Jules Verne, Sophia, are you still reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? You said it was rather dense with scientific names for sea creatures and plants, but that interested me. And I know you've begun reading Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, which will only be more dense with the same.
