New Book

Not Becoming My Mother by Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl. I have enjoyed her other three books: Tender at the Bone, Comfort Me with Apples and Garlic and Saphires. Those are all about food. I expect this one will include food, but perhaps it won't be central to the work. Don spotted it on the New Arrivals table at B&N for me yesterday, and I checked it out tonight.

I finished the Gillies memoir. Sad story of a marriage breaking up. She's not a "writer," but it's a quick read and a glimpse into another life, so I stuck with it.

Christine, how was Happens Every Day? I was intrigued by your post about it last week. I can't even imagine marrying someone, bearing two of his children, being totally in love, moving with/for him, and then being unceremoniously dumped. I would probably go a little crazy.

It was kind of weird.

The author, Isabel, was friends with the woman from her husband's department and kind of forced a friendship with her, even set up some situations for her husband to be alone with the woman.

She and her husband have tickets to the opera one night, and at the last minute, she says, why don't you just take Sylvia. Another time, she has him drive Sylvia home after a late dinner at their house.

Then the break-up starts to happen and she's totally in denial and thinks that Sylvia is the only one at fault, that Sylvia is trying to tempt her uninterested husband away. At this point in the book, even I know that her husband is in a full-fledged affair, and I'm not even there. And then her husband, who is obviously done with the marriage no matter what, concedes to go from their home in Ohio back to their old therapist in New York City for a few sessions.

People do weird and irrational things for love, but the book doesn't tell the tale well enough for me to understand these two disconnected lovers.

Wow, that is weird. Ok, thanks for the synopsis...I think my interest in the book has cooled, which is fine since I already have so much I'd like to read and so little time! :)
