- I often have a few books with bookmarks in them at once. I enjoy classics more than contemporary works of fiction, often read historical fiction, and love to get glimpses into other people's lives by reading memoirs and biographies.

My daughter begged me to read a Percy Jackson book (Riordan?) - so I am reading 'The Lightning Thief". I finished up "Contact" - has anyone else read it? "DUNE" is next - it's been years since I read it.
To Your Scattered Bodies Go, by Phillip Jose Farmer.
I picked up Red Seas Under Red Skies, a piece of fantasy by Scott Lynch, which is great fun, when I decided Way of the Wolf wasn't worth my time. I'm reading it on my IPod, which is an interesting experience. I'm trying to do as much fun reading before next week happens and I have to go back to school reading only. I also picked up Dark at the Roots, which is okay but not as good as Zippy.
Mopping up the tears after finishing "Tess of the D'Urbevilles" last night.
Now about to begin reading "Gen-e-sis: The Scientific Quest for Life's Origin" by Robert Hazen
Finishing The Anthologist and then have to choose between Chabon's Manhood for Amateurs, Farmer's The Gods of Riverworld, Cokinos' The Fallen Sky or zipping through the Artemis Fowl series.

Don, would you care to share your opinion on the new Baker book?
Don, definitely go with either the riverworld book or finish up the 2nd Tiers novel!
Holy updates, Batman! Geez, I go on vacation for one week...
I just finished Julie and Julia and loved it (although I can see it making some vegetarians a bit squeamish or even offended--actually, even meat-eaters might get squeamish at some of it), and I was gonna see the movie last night with some girlfriends, but my jet lag (and some other issues not worth mentioning here) got in the way, and I opted to stay home.
I did check out some bookstores in Spain and I took pictures, but sadly they weren't as architecturally interesting as many that have been featured here. I'll eventually get all my pics and what-not up on my blog. My goal is by tonight, but we'll see.

I read and saw Julie & Julia. I liked the movie better than the book. Meryl Streep pulls it off. Thinking about reading Child's My Life in France.
Insomniac, I've never read any Hardy, but you've got me thinking about Tess. . .

No Hardy Christine? I'll bring my battered copy of Tess to the park on Friday(assumiming you'll be there) and you're welcome to borrow it if you'd like.
Last night I watched the first half of the 1998 film version of Tess which sticks almost perfectly to the story. It's not bad but lacks the atmospherics of the story. I'm waiting for the BBC miniseries version to become available on DVD and I also need to re-watch the 1980 Roman Polanski version which I remember enjoying many moons ago.
I was going to ask if you were following up with any film versions.

Didn't read Contact. Dune is a must-read (Ben.) and the less said by me about The Anthologist, the better.
