Tell Me Tuesday

It's our first day of the new school year (homeschooling my now 7th and 3rd graders)! We're going to be reading a lot this year.

What are you reading right now?

I just finished "The Help" and I loved it...kinda saw the Terrible Awful coming, but it was great anyway. She doesn't tie everything up neatly either; she kind of leaves some of what happens to the maids at the end up in the air, but not in a way that's ominous or anything. You get the sense of freedom and possibilities rather than danger. And I had no idea it was written by a white southern woman who was raised by a "Negra."

Read Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich. Just bloody awful. A giant ego writing a barely fact-checked mostly made-up terribly one-sided piece of crap. And mostly about people you in no way can care about.
Ick. Just ick.

I'm re-reading the Odyssey. Have I ever mentioned my feelings on poetry?

Just finished "Gen-e-sis: the scientific quest for the origins of life" by Hazen. We've all heard about the primordial soup but this book opened my eyes to the "hows and whys" and the possibility of other scientific eventualities such as biogenesis in deep-sea thermal vents and stabilization of the first biomolecules by the minerals present. There was also discussion of the possibility of life beginning inside rocks.

Thought-provoking most of the time, a little dry now and then. I confess to skimming the last few chapters.

I've just begun "EarthDance; Living Systems in Evolution" by Elisabet Sahtouris. It evokes Lovelock's Gaia Hypothesis. I haven't read enough to have an opinion yet.

Like you Christine, we started lessons this week. My personal reading will take a backseat but I'll get to enjoy some juvenile lit instead.

Red Tent..Voyage of the Beagle...and a shocking amount of odd magazines and newspaper stories that I find around the house - quick reading. I think I polished off 50% of the NYT Sunday magazine....

Do let us know what you think, Lisa. I might read Gladwell's "Blink" and/or "Tipping Point" now.
