Exceptional Kids' Books

This fall I am facilitating three reading groups for children ages 7 to 12. We are reading some very good books:

The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong--- Schoolchildren in a Dutch fishing village work with each other and their elders to help bring storks back to their shores.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare--- In 1687, 16-year-old Kit must go to New England to live with her aunt and uncle in a Puritan community.

I, Juan de Pareja by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino--- Historical fiction about a half-African slave of the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez.

What do these books all have in common?

Newberry medals/honors?
I have fond memories of you reading us Wheel on the School. I loved reading Witch of Blackbird Pond on my own. Never heard of the third one--with which group are you reading that one?

Newbery Medals is right!

I am reading I, Juan de Pareja to Olivia and 5 other 11- and 12-year-olds. It is a rather slow, quiet book, but rich.

Caleb says he likes "Wheel on the School", Christine. I asked for more and he said, "They're trying to get storks!" I shouldn't ask for book reviews when he's playing video games.
