Recently, I checked out Rick Steves' new 40-hour box set of his travel shows and watched at least half of it over the course of a few weeks. Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland. Wonderful. I even liked the 45-minute infomercial on his guided tours through Europe. He does a beautiful job of getting across the feel of a place and its people while giving some historical background and often showcasing the art and food of any given country.
Rick Steves has a new book out, Travel As a Political Act, which is more personal than his many travel guidebooks on the countries of Europe. I appreciate his unique perspective; he is an American who spends a third of every year in Europe. He is proud of his home country, but is very aware of how we are viewed in other parts of the world. He is a loyal American who looks to successes in other countries and is hopeful that we all might learn something from each other. I found the book to be very level-headed and optimistic.
Here are the chapter headings:
1) How To Travel As a Political Act
2) Lessons from the Former Yugoslavia: After the War
3) Europe Unites: Successes and Struggles
4) Resurrection in El Salvador
5) Denmark: Highly Taxed and Highly Content
6) Turkey and Morocco: Sampling Secular Islam
7) Europe: Not "Hard on Drugs" or "Soft on Drugs". . . but Smart on Drugs
8) Mission: Understand Iran
9) Homecoming
