Reading Promise Makes It to 100 Days!

Back on June 11, I explained the Reading Promise that I made with my younger daughter (don't worry, Big Sis has a Great Movies thing with my husband--they're up to 50 Great Films watched and logged--more on that another time). The Reading Promise was kicked off on Maria's 10th birthday and was inspired by a book of the same name (written by Alice Ozma).

On August 3, I listed all the books that I had read aloud to Maria at that point. Since then we've finished these:

Old Mother West Wind
Fanny at Chez Panisse
Mary Poppins
Rabbit Hill
Ramona the Brave

Now, we are reading Julius Lester's retelling of the tales of Uncle Remus mostly because we love the ride Splash Mountain and were curious. The stories are strange! And violent! There have been deaths by chopping and scalding. And once an animal has been killed, he still might show up in another story. And, oddly, in one story, Lester brings things into contemporary times with the mention of television, Dr. Pepper, jogging suits, and Adidas. If I had it to choose again, I'd seek out the earliest collection of these old tales, not one done in 1987.

Anyway. . .Today makes 100 days of my reading aloud to Maria, and we are going to mark the day just like the father/daughter team in the original book: We are having pancakes. For dinner.

I loved reading your post, Christine, but I kept thinking: "Pancakes for supper." So guess what we had Sunday?
