Comfort Food
I'm reading Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin. I fall into this book as easily as I fall into an unmade bed. Last night I got home later than usual from working at the bookstore, and if I had been reading anything else, I would have skipped it and gone straight to sleep. But since I was reading this, I stayed awake for the extra 15 minutes. Easy. Colwin's a writer who loves friends and food and cooking for friends at home. In this book and its follow-up, More Home Cooking, Colwin talks a little bit about traveling or cooking away from home, but even that feels cozy and safe, not challenging. Her friendly style of writing is more like talking with a neighbor over a fence than being shown up by the best cook in the neighborhood at a block party. I came away from last night's reading with an easy recipe for making real bread at home that I think I just might try.

Don, you didn't care much for this book, but you do read a lot of food writing. It's a very womanly book to me. A mom kind of book. Was that the reason? You say you're not just getting back at me for Zippy, but I wonder. . .
We were just discussing comfort food and tuna noodle casserole at work. It's not my favorite, but sounds good. Or my mother's chile cheese casserole...or Trader Joe's homemade tortillas....what's your fav. comfort food? Holly's is chocolate chip cookies, Ben's is mashed potatoes. Tawny says fried chicken.
One word for you, Sophia, DONUTS.
A big bowl of buttery, cheesy pasta or rice.
Depends what mood I'm in:
Good Mood: chocolate
Bad Mood: chocolate
Happy: chocolate
Sad: chocolate
Stressed: chocolate
Relaxed: chocolate
Busy: chocolate
Bored: chocolate
Not so much a Mom as a kinda pedantic Home-Ec teacher. "I do this... I like this... Here's my recipe...". Sorry, just didn't do it for me.
(Please don't sic your posse on me!)
Oh, Um... comfort food? Gotta be Mom's "Calico Bean Bake". Four kinds of beans ground beef and bacon! Want the recipe? Just ask.
