I often have a few books with bookmarks in them at once. I enjoy classics more than contemporary works of fiction, often read historical fiction, and love to get glimpses into other people's lives by reading memoirs and biographies.
1."The Varieties of Scientific Experience; A Personal View of the Search for God" by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan (actually anything by Carl Sagan would be more than acceptable).
2. "The Henry Williamson Animal Saga" by Henry Williamson (fond memories from childhood)
3. "I was a Doctor in Auschwitz" Giselle Perl (can't seem to get the darn thing from interlibrary loan)
4. The entire "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon (I've read them but just want Jamie sitting on my shelves)
5 The "Lord John" series by Diana Gabaldon (haven't read these yet)
My chance of finding any of these under the tree? Slim to none. Oh well. The one book I'm guaranteed to get (because I bought it myself and gave it to hubby to wrap)is the Paperchase 2008 Page per Day Diary which is my preferred method of organizing our homeschool work. It's all work and no play for me this Christmas.....are you shedding tears for me yet?
Alas, I don't expect to find any books under the tree this year (at least, not for me). Because of my B&N discount, nobody buys any for me--I get gift cards.
Danika doesn't wish for BOOKS under her tree, she wishes for AUTHORS, right? ;)
As it is holiday, I wish not for "regular" books, but for "gift" books (i.e. big coffee-table-esque books)...
Currently on the "WANT!!!" list are:
--The Beat Generation --The one we have with the 2500 movie questions that's like a game (which I bought for my sister with my member coupon --for like sixteen bucks!!--which I will play with until I wrap, hopefully not *completely* depleting the battery) --the ocean one (Planet Ocean?) that I wanted earlier, but got "Deep" instead, as it is more than a smidge cooler
--many others, for I love the bookstuffs and am quite a greedy reader :)
I would love Rosemary Sutcliffe's Wanderings of Odysseus and Black Ships Before Troy, both illustrated by Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee. (We're studying ancient history in homeschool this year and these would make great read-alouds.) I also would like two of my favorite Christmas picture books, The Tomten and Tomten and the Fox by Astrid Lindgren. And I'd like to own a paperback copy of Bella Tuscany by Frances Mayes. I've had out this well-worn library hardcover many times.
Anyone else out there got a list for us before we move on?
Okay, I'll give a list for Chris and myself...these are books not to be rented... 1. Noel Coward's Letters 2. The Cheese Monkeys (Chipp Kidd!) 3. A Photographer's Life: 1990-2005 4. that new supah sexy Star Wars book - not the pop-up one...the one with all the archives. 5. 300 6. The Yiddish Policemen's Union: A Novel
I guess that does it. It seems like there have been other books that have caught my eye over the year, but I can't remember them. Like that book about putting stuff on your cat...
Yes, yes. And Chabon has a newer one still, Gentlemen of the Road. I'm interested in that.
And for me, add Betty Crocker's Ultimate Cookie Book (1992). I got it from the library the other day, and the girls and I have pored over it. Tonight we made Peanut Butter Kisses, The Ultimate Chocolate Chip and Fudgey Saucepan Brownies. Dee-cent.

DRD, it's just a wish list. What five books would you love to add to your collection right now?

Doesn't that book spell cookie c-o-o-k-y? And have the original kitschy art? Stephanie owned a vintage copy - it's a wonderful book.
I think the one you mention is an older one. This one is from the 90's and has loads of simple, great cookie recipes.
Fudgy saucepan brownies? *drool*
