The Catcher in the Jar

The Catcher in the Rye and The Bell Jar both involve young people who have suffered or are suffering from depression. The two main characters are both isolated and lonely in New York City. They are both cynical and disillusioned with the people around them. But I feel so much more for Holden Caulfield than I do for Esther Greenwood. Holden makes me laugh, but Esther just makes me sad, keeps going places I don't want to go and taking me with her.

Ha! I was wondering what that book was. It looked like a "classic."
