Movie Monday
Jim and I have begun watching HBO's John Adams based on the book by David McCullough, which I read when it first came out. From the first five minutes, Jim and I were both very interested in this adaptation. Paul Giamatti plays Adams, and Laura Linney plays his wife, Abigail. I love that they were such partners and that he respected her thoughts and opinions so much. That is evident in the letters they both left behind and comes through in this film. One tough moment for this sensitive viewer: Now I know what it might have looked like for someone to be tarred and feathered. I will never use that term lightly again.

Ooh, we've been watching this too! (I heart Netflix.) We're halfway through the second disc, and holy cow, is it compelling. And yes, the tarring & feathering just about made me ill. Not because I have a hard time with such things, y'all know my reading tastes, but because it was so dang brutal. I have a fierce patriotic pride, and I'm eternally grateful to those who fought for our independence, but at the same time, I am ashamed at the mob mentality that comes out so easily, and at the treatment of poor souls who simply got caught in between, just trying to do their jobs. What a frightening time to live in.
Rock on, HBO.
Thanks for your comments, Heather. Not surprised you and the drummer are watching, too. I know you like your history.
Jim and I just finished the first disc and are sending it back tomorrow. Really good. Really good. Well told. Well acted. There was real tension when they took the final vote--like I didn't know what was going to happen! And I almost have stopped noticing the silly wigs.
I watched this the first week it came out (i planned my netflix rentals so i could get it!!!) It was AMAZING!!!! They did a REALLY good job with recreating the time period and the acting as very good. I've been reading and watching a lot about this period lately and i learn something new with everything i go through. On the last disk there's a thing about David McCullough. its totally worth watching! Its was very cool to understand where he's coming from when he writes his books and his story about how he became a "historian" is VERY cool. I hope you all enjoy!!!! I sure did :-)
Thanks, Stacey. We'll be sure to look for the extras on the last disc.
No TVs out here, so we have been watching movies on our computers in the bunkhouse. The other night we tracked down a copy of The Big Lebowski. the dude abides....
