Your Turn Thursday

What have been some of the best or most interesting female characters ever written?

I guess I'll have to go with Thursday Next, but I have always had a thing for Bob Heinlein's female characters (his male characters, ugg).

I'll go with Morgaine (Morgan le Fay) from The Mists of Avalon. The book is a great re-telling of an old legend, but from the female perspective. I'm going to have to read it again someday.

Scarlett O'Hara is quite a character.

Ooh, I love Mists of Avalon. That book was incredible. Have you read any of the others in the series? I'm curious to know if they're worth reading.
One of my favorite female characters is Lyra, from His Dark Materials. I was especially impressed that the male author (my beloved Philip Pullman) was able to make her seem believable.
Also I'm quite fond of both Death and Delirium from Gaiman's Sandman series (sorry, Don). They were very original, fascinating characters.

Offred from The Handmaid's Tale, also by Atwood

Izumi Curtis, Lust, and Dante from Fullmetal Alchemist (Not a book, but I couldn't leave them out.)

Besides, if it wasn't a book, how could I be reading it?

Um, I just read what you wrote, Don, and that's not a book :p

Eep! I'm sorry. I grovel. I writhe in abject prostration, even. I haven't read the manga, have only seen the anime. Can I say it's a "text?"

Abject prostration accepted. I know you'll know better in future. DRD
