nook

Have you heard? Barnes and Noble is coming out with an e-reader on November 30 (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/?cds2Pid=30919)! It has a color touch screen below the e-ink screen (http://www.eink.com/technology/howitworks.html). I can't wait to see one. Don probably got to try one at the managers' meeting yesterday. Lucky.

It's so pretty! I wanna touch it.

Unfortunately I did not get any hands-on at the meeting. I have placed my pre-order so hands-on will commence on Dec. 1.
Anyone else on this blog think they might have to pick one of these up? Why or why not?

nice - not too big...color...I don't think I will buy one at this point in time - just the price and I-could-borrow-it-from-the-library aspect - but if I were a more avid reader, it would be great.

I actually have mixed feelings about it. I am excited that it is out there (or soon will be) and hope to try one out in the store soon. But I really enjoy the tactile experiences of reading various books. And I use the library a lot. So even if I were handed one for free, I don't know what percent of my usual reading would be done on it.

Did I write as my daughter Olivia again?! Jeez!

The whole "I love to touch a physical book" thing is completely lost on me, I'm afraid.

I almost certainly won't, largely because I'm at a place where food is fast becoming a luxury item, due to lack of fundage. However, if cost were not an issue, I probably still wouldn't, because I'm really quite a traditionalist. I love the feel & smell of a real book, the different fonts used, the history of who might have read that copy before me (particularly if it's a very old book), that sort of thing. I don't much go for electronic gadgets, aside from the most basic of cell phones. Besides, my hard copies of books will never run out of batteries. ;-)

See, Don, I'm not alone.

How you guys managed to give up papyrus for that new-fangled "paper" I'll never know. And stone tablets? Now that's tradition!

Psh. You're just jealous because books aren't willing to have an emotional connection with you.

I've been comparing the Nook & Kindle (Amazon's version), and I'm torn between the two. Features are very similar. They cost the same initially for the reader; but B&N e-books run a bit more, then again B&N also has lots of FREE downloads. Kindle can read out loud, but it sounds like Steven Hawking, not like an audio book. I love the feel of a "real" book, but I really love the idea of saving the trees needed to produce these books AND the space in my house needed for storage. I definitely want to try out the Nook demo when it hits the store!

Martha nearly pooped her pants today when I told her about the "enter a B&N with your nook and read any e-book for free for as long as you're in the store" feature. I *definitely* feel that's a selling point. Can we confirm the deets on that feature? I don't want to be lying.
