Mary asked if I'd do a Movie Monday to help give her and her husband Vince some ideas for movie rentals. Seems they've been out of the movie loop for a while. This is what she told me, "The last two movies we saw out were Seabiscuit and Frost & Nixon. I like escapes (Stargate) & based-on-true (Changeling). Vince likes action (Bourne) & mafia (Godfather). We both like justice (Shawshank Redemption) & classics (Dracula, GWTW)." Jim and I put our heads together and came up with these suggestions:
Mary:
Searching for Bobby Fischer, Quiz Show, The Social Network, The King's Speech
Vince:
Goodfellas, The Sopranos, Gangs of New York, The Departed, Band of Brothers
Both:
Spider-Man 2, Cool Hand Luke, Lonesome Dove, The Verdict, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Queen, Crimson Tide
What other suggestions do you all have for Mary and Vince?

I think perhaps both Mary and Vince would like a movie called Moon, directed by Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son, who directed the more recent Source Code as well). It's not a huge blockbuster but Yancy and I both really enjoyed Moon; it's about a man who has been doing work on the moon for a corporation on Earth (harvesting the sun's energy off of the moon's surface or something). When the movie begins, he's nearing his 7-year tenure on the moon and is looking forward to returning to Earth and being reunited with his family (and being very well-compensated for his time away). As the day of his departure draws near, he starts to feel less and less like himself, and begins to realize that things are not as they seem.
Mary, I'm not sure what category to put this movie in based on the list of characteristics you provided, but I think "justice" comes closest. But Yancy and I found it to be a pretty satisfying movie overall.
Thanks, Christine & Lisa. I started out with Cinderella Man (w/Russell Crowe), based on another friend's recommendation. With these & other suggestions, I now have almost 20 movies in our queue. This will easily take us to the end of the year.
Great! Let us know how you like them!
Hi Mary, I hope I'm not too late to add my 2 cents. For you I would pick Babies and The Devil Wears Prada. For Vince I would choose American Gangster and 3:10 to Yuma (can never get too much R. Crowe...). And for both of you, I'm suggesting The Illusionist and The Importance of Being Earnest. I loved them all!
Thanks, Cooksin. I added 3:10 to Yuma (we both like Crowe). We had already seen The Illusionist & Devil Wears Prada at friends' homes. For Babies, did you mean the recent documentary or the 1990-ish drama?
We loved Cinderella Man!
This week: The King's Speech.
Yes, Mary, Cooksin is suggesting the documentary "Babies." I wrote about it on my blog back on November 19th. Check it out!
