Jim and I watched "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" this weekend, another documentary. Here's the blurb from Netflix:
When Steve Wiebe got laid off, he turned to the classic arcade game Donkey Kong for solace; soon, he decided to challenge Billy Mitchell's long-standing record score. So began the bitter rivalry that lies at the heart of this curiously compelling documentary. Providing a history of competitive video gaming and a look at some of the key players, The King of Kong is at its best when revealing just how far Mitchell will go to retain his crown.
It was good. Weird. Like Spellbound, Wordplay, and Word Wars, this film shows the inside of a competitive little niche that is a way of life for the participants. It also made me think of the documentary American Movie in that it is funny in a painful kind of way. Knitting Heather, I think you would like this. Cooksin, you might not like it for the same reasons you didn't care for American Movie. This movie has a "good guy" and a "bad guy," and it was fun to watch it all play out.
Anyone got a good documentary to suggest?

I'm re-watching "Walking With Dinosaurs" right NOW!!! :D It's fantastic, if you and the girls haven't seen it already. Super educational and exciting to watch; it's like watching a nature show, but with dinosaurs! The CGI (?) they used is actually rather good.
It's been talked about here before, but please see the Tom Petty doc "Runnin' Down a Dream".
This week watched "The Bridge" -filmmaker Eric Steel and his crew filmed the Golden Gate Bridge during daylight hours from two separate locations for all of 2004, recording most of the two dozen deaths in that year. That footage, along with interviews with friends, families and witnesses makes for some harrowing watching.
Not for the faint of heart.
Also watched "Vampiros lesbos", but that wasn't really a documentary. I hope. ;-)
The Bridge, yikes. Jim ran across that on tv the other night and told me what it was. I watched about two minutes of it and decided to stay away from that one.
Thanks for the Walking with Dinosaurs tip, Martha.
I have "Helvetica" at home to watch..it's a whole documentary about the excessive use of the font. Very exciting. I'll let you know how it goes. In the meantime, there is a funny YouTube short about the overuse of the font Trajan on movie posters...
Don-
You just gave me something to add to my Netflix lineup.
*cough* But you misspelled "Vampyros." :)
You're welcome. Anytime.
Y'know, Martha, I'm so happy to see that Don's still alive I'm going to hold off picking on him for a whole day or so. Really.
Danika, Don knows full well I am not picking on him! I am loving him in my own way. With grammatical and spelling corrections :D And besides, in the face of tragedy and catastrophic events, it is best to just move on and continue with life, yes?
See, Don, how much turmoil you stir up? You're that much closer to being The Claw from Inspector Gadget ;)
Martha-
I saw that the title had a "y" instead of an "i" when I watched it. I took the spelling from IMDB, which was where I guessed people would look it up.
And, after you see it, maybe you can explain the scorpion to me.
Hi Danika!
The flytrap is still with us. It's the cat's favorite plant as it smells like fish!
So glad to have filled your home with the smell of fish. I knew it was exactly what you'd want.
Hey Don, I just got the coolest electronic dictionary yesterday!!!! It has 400,000 words, talks in five languages, and has all these other bells and whistles!!! *drool, purr, verspangle*
Danika, I can't WAIT for you to see it!!!!
What? What's all this? You wait for me to buy the boring electronic dictionary and go out and find the cool one? I've gotta see this!
Danika, I swear, I just found it about a week, a week and a half ago. Plus, it retails for a LOT more. (But with my B&N membership and a 25% coupon I had, I saved quite a hefty sum.) Ooh, it is sweet. But probably more than you'd want to spend...
*is fondling said calculator with one hand while typing*
You've dubbed it Excalibur the Umpteenth, I presume?
You know me only too well, Danika :D
