This fine collection was edited by Peter Neill and came out in 2000. In it, there are excerpts, articles, poems, and pieces by Washington Irving, Owen Chase, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Mark Twain, James Thurber, Elizabeth Bishop, Rachel Carson, E. B. White, and many others. I was surprised, saddened and educated by the article "A Presentation of Whales" by Barry Lopez on the 1979 beaching of 41 sperm whales on the coast of Florence, Oregon. I've also read an excerpt from Thoreau's
Cape Cod and reread Longfellow's "Wreck of the Hesperus." What a delight to have all of these marine-themed pieces gathered together in one vessel.
